About the Event

This session will present physician leadership models from two healthcare organisations – one NHS and one international opening soon in the UK. It’ll give you insight into and highlight the advantages of physician leadership in health care. This will include the discussion of strategies for developing and enabling physician leadership alongside the contrast between physician leadership in different organisations.

Speakers:

Ian Abbs, CEO and CMO, Guys and St. Thomas

Dr Ian Abbs became the Chief Executive of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in July 2019 and Chief Medical Officer in January 2017. He holds the degrees of BSc in Immunology and MB BS in Medicine, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and holds an MBA from the University of Cambridge. Ian has had a career in renal medicine at Guy’s Hospital, both as a postgraduate and as a consultant. In recognition of his commitment to research and education, he holds a Senior Lecturer position in the Faculty of Medicine, Kings College London.

Ian is Chair of the National Institutes of Health Research Clinical Research Network and is the former Chair of the Association of UK University Hospitals Medical Directors Board. He is Chair of the London Genomics Medicine Consortium and of Digital Health.London, the consortium of London academic organisations accountable for the development and delivery of digital health and technology. Most recently, Ian became the President of the European Union Healthcare Alliance.

Brian Donley – CEO, Cleveland Clinic London

Dr. Brian Donley began his new role as Chief of Staff and Chief of Clinical Operations of the Cleveland Clinic on January 1, 2015. Just prior to that, he served as President of the Community Hospitals of the Cleveland Clinic Health System and eighteen Family Health Centers from January 2014 through December 2014. Dr. Donley is also Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Dr. Donley attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate studies, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Donley completed a fellowship in orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN. He joined Cleveland Clinic’s Orthopaedic & Rheumatologic Institute in 1996, serving in various roles over the years, including Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics, Director of the Foot and Ankle Center, Director of the Foot and Ankle Fellowship, and Director of Research and Education for Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is part of a team of orthopaedic consultants for the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the National Hockey League Players’ Association.

Tommaso Falcone – Chief of Staff / Medical Director, Cleveland Clinic London

Tommaso Falcone, M.D., FRCS(C), FACOG, is Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He is presently Chief of Staff, Chief Academic Officer, Medical Director. Cleveland Clinic London.  He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in general obstetrics and gynecology, as well as Reproductive Endocrinology. He is also certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (UK ad eundem).

Dr. Falcone was appointed Chair of the department of obstetrics & Gynecology in 2001 and subsequently Chair of the Women’s health institute in 2008 to 2018. He was a member of the board of governors of Cleveland Clinic between 2006-2013, member of the Executive Team (ET) from 2007-2010. He served as Vice Chairman of Professional Staff Affairs, Cleveland Clinic from 2007-2014.

J. Gutierrez, Chief of Quality, Safety and Patient Experience, Cleveland Clinic London

James Gutierrez has served as a leader in quality improvement in the Division of Regional Medical Practice and now in the Cleveland Clinic Medicine Institute. He also serves as the Chairman of Community Internal Medicine, which includes primary care internal medicine physicians practicing at Cleveland Clinic's Family Health Centers.
